Yogurt's Pumpkin Pie Yoda

Image
It ain't green but it's Yogurt and really, Yogurt > Yoda every day of the week, fight me. ... and may the schwartz be with you! Yogurt's Pumpkin Pie Yoda Ingredients 6 oz plain, unsweetened yogurt ---> 18 oz tripled 1/4 cup plain pumpkin puree ---> 3/4 cup tripled 1/4 tsp cinnamon ---> 3/4 tsp tripled 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice* 3/4 tsp ---> tripled 1 Tbsp maple syrup ---> 3 Tbsp tripled Instructions Combine all of the above. Whisk to combine. Yeah, that's really it.   A few items of interest: This recipe makes two servings. I use a yogurt maker and make my own yogurt.  It's freakin' awesome.  Much nicer for the environment, too, since we're buying far fewer plastic yogurt containers, while still eating a tonne of yogurt. I can triple this recipe and get it all to fit into an old yogurt container, which means I don't have to measure every time, and at the end of a work day bookended by a bike commute?  That...

Flightsuit Orange & Banana Glaze

Image
I was looking for a recipe for an orange-cinnamon glaze for fish and ended up with a recipe for topping for waffles that beats all other toppings forever (and we'd tried a lot of different toppings: maple syrup, honey butter, yogurt, you get the idea).  For the order of operations, I think I'd make the batter for the waffles and start the waffle iron heating, then start the glaze, and make the waffles while the sauce reduces, but this was definitely a science experiment that worked out so well that I'm now trying to reverse-engineer it into something replicable. Also, Mark Hamill looks adorable in bright orange, don't let anybody ever tell you any different. <3 Flightsuit Orange & Banana Glaze Ingredients 2 Tbsp butter, melted 2 Tbsp sugar 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 cup orange juice 2 bananas, sliced 1/2-3/4" thick Instructions In a 9" skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add sugar and cinnamon and whisk to combine. Add the orange ...

Spear-Wielder Balsa(mic) Brussels Sprouts

Guardian of the Sacred Spirit  is my all-time favorite anime, due in very large part to the way Balsa, the main character, is portrayed to be multi-faceted, flawed, human, and -- most importantly -- kick-ass.  My favorite line of hers is in the first episode, when she's just beat up a bunch of men sent to kill her, she points her spear at the final guy and says, "You'll die twice before you draw your sword." I live  for moments of verbal genius, heavens. Now we've been enjoying  Boba Fett Died like a B*tch  brussels sprouts for some years now (about as long as I've been babbling endlessly about Star Wars , really), but this recipe -- much like Balsa's characterization as a protagonist -- elevates the art to the point that you almost feel sorry for its inferior.  And I'll still eat Boba Fett sprouts, just like I'll still watch Star Wars , but there's no competition between it and Guardian , just as there's no competition between this rec...

Horton Hears a Horchata

Why  would anyone ever pay for this in the store?  It's stupid-easy to make and tastes amazing made at home.  Pretty sure I'm in love. Also tonnes of love to the lady who posted  this amazing video  on how to make homemade horchata.  I've tweaked the recipe a little (because of course  I have) but she was the original inspiration. You can make this in about 2 hours, but all said it takes about 5 minutes of work.  Gonna bet that it's amazing in the summertime, but it's January and 17*F/-8*C where I am and I'm enjoying it. so maybe it's just that good. . Not maybe.  Definitely.  This drink is good . Horton Hears a Horchata Ingredients 3/4 cup rice -- whatever you have in the house 1 1/2 cup water, warm to a simmer 1 Tbsp vanilla 14 oz sweetened condensed milk 12 oz evaporated milk 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon 6 cups drinking water 12 ice cubes Instructions In a cereal bowl, combine rice and warm water, stirring just until ...

The Perks of Being a Walnut (Candied)

2018 was just a really good year for me, bringing with it innumerable blessings, one of which being some nice holiday traditions that helped ease down the blues I normally feel toward the year's end.  Our most recent new tradition is that of making a  cheesecake  on New Year's Eve that isn't done and ready to eat until New Year's Day, making it a nice treat that spans the two years.  I don't actually know if you can call it a tradition until you've done it more than once, now that I'm typing it all out, but whatever, it was so awesome to have cheesecake for breakfast on the first day of the new year that it's going to happen again next December, see if it doesn't. Anyway!  I wanted to make a special topping for our cheesecake and, while trolling through all the recipes I've saved over the course of the year, discovered that I had a recipe saved for  candied pecans  that claimed to be easy and quick -- 5 minutes, start-to finish.  After all the ...

Nice Day for a Vegan Wedding

You know that vegan cooking has arrived when a pair of non-vegans do a cake taste-test for their wedding cake and decide that the vegan cake option is, hands-down, the BEST cake out of all the options.  Like, nobody cares that it's vegan, so much as they care that it's just plain delicious.  Which it is, really -- dense and not too sweet, but very vanilla-y, a perfect offset to the sweetness of  the best-ever cream cheese vanilla buttercream frosting  I smeared all over it.  Oh, and because it's so dense, we had no problems at all with the wedding cake trying to tip over, despite being three layers tall, made taller by the amount of frosting I shoved between the layers. Yup. The groom's cake , on the other hand, was completely, unnecessarily vegan, frosted with a vegan tofu chocolate frosting that defies description, it's so tasty.  One batch of the stuff was enough to frost 6 cupcakes and thickly frost the moustache cake and still have probably half ...

Red Leader Roasted Okra & Parsnips

Wedge Antilles is a fascinating character.  He doesn't have any special abilities or status, no tragic family backstory or hero's journey.  He's friends with everybody's favorite space farmer Jedi, survives the Death Star  not once but twice , and as of the writing of this recipe, he's survived all the Star Wars  movies and hasn't been tortured by Darth Vader even once. I think that's pretty cool. Almost as cool as this amazing recipe, which can be a main character or a side personality, depending on what role you need it to play, and it tastes like it's a lot of work, but it's so  easy it's almost embarrassing.  I've made it as a side dish to go with  Badass Biker Chick(pea) Burgers , and I've served them as the main course with a hardboiled egg on the side.  They're healthy, delicious, low-carb, gluten-free, soyfree, vegan, all the words -- but they're super tasty, go make 'em. Now. Red Leader Roasted Okra & Par...

Si, Es Posible! Cake

My partner and I went to a restaurant a few weeks back and for dessert, we got a slice of something called the "Imposible." It was advertised as "chocolate cake with custard drizzled with caramel." As it turns out, that's like telling someone about Niagara Falls by saying "It's some rocks with water falling off it." This thing was ACTUALLY chocolate cake made with cinnamon and cayenne pepper, topped with a thick vanilla custard, dusted over with cinnamon, and drizzled in rich warm caramel sauce. We each took a bite and melted a little because holy heavens it was good. "I know how to make this," I told my partner. "Really?" he said. "This is a thing?" "No," I said (around a mouthful of cake, I wasn't about to let conversation rob me of my fair half of the slice), "but I can make this." (Side-note: my other superpowers include being able to nap anywhere, diving way too deep way too fast in...

Rolling in the Deep Dish Cinnamon Rolls

These cinnamon rolls are not good for you. In fact, they are actively bad for you. But they're cinnamon rolls, so they're SUPPOSED to be wicked awful for your health. Makes it so that you won't make them terribly often, which you wouldn't anyway because honestly this recipe is pretty long and kind of a pain in the neck (for all that it's not all that difficult). You can easily double the recipe for more cinnamon rolls, and if you do so, just use a 13x9" pan. Yes, this makes a casserole dish-size serving if doubled. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go DDR off all the cinnamon rolls I'm about to eat. /caloric guilt Rolling in the Deep Dish Cinnamon Rolls Ingredients Total butter needed : 8 tbsp (1 stick) Total sugar needed : 8 1/2 tsp (or 2 tbsp 2 1/2 tsp) Total cinnamon needed : 1 1/4 tsp Total time needed : 2 hours Total yield : 24 cinnamon rolls 1 cup warm water 1 1/8 tsp yeast  2 tsp white sugar 1 1/2 cups flour, added se...
