12 Parsec Kessel Rum Balls

I'd never seriously thought, "Man, I wish there were a way for me to do shots with my colleagues in the middle of the day, in the office, and have no one say anything about it other than 'you're so nice for bringing us treats, molly,'" but now that a) I've done exactly this and b) the results were hilarious , I find I think this all the time . What a world we live in. Quick story:  first rum balls (I think they were bourbon balls, actually) I ever had, a colleague had made some, and brought me one out of pity because I was too shy to go over and ask for one (I have introvert moments sometimes okay?).  I was so happy he'd brought me a treat that I put the whole thing in my mouth straight away, only realizing after I'd started chewing that holy shit this thing is strong .  Delicious, but knock-you-on-your-ass alcoholic.  Said colleague seemed pleased and went away smiling, while I frantically texted my partner that we were taking the bus home bec...

Where the Rubber Rainbow Hits the Rainbow Road

It started out with Star Wars , because of course it did, but man, it grew into something amazing.  You think you've had delicious booze before, and you probably have, but all the same, this is one you need to try.  It's beautiful and delicious.  Fun to make, too. A note:  I have silicon ice cube trays that I use for these, and they're SO much better than hard plastic.  Each color makes 9 cubes, and you can cut each cube into 4 cubes, which means you're getting 36 small cubes from each color, or 216 total cubes.  And that's lovely. Another note:  You can do this with straight-up vodka, but you should throw in some flavored things if you can.  More fun that way. Edit:  Now with pictures!  https://imgur.com/a/E5l2OWB Where the Rubber Rainbow Hits the Rainbow Road Ingredients (You will need, in total, 12 Tbsp unflavored gelatin (this is 3/4 cup, total) if you make the full rainbow.) Cherry jello (3 oz box) 1 cup Kirschwass...

Rice Pudding is NOT a Breakfast Food

I ate it for breakfast anyway. And then I was sick. It's just so delicious , is all, and David made it for me before our breakfast smoothies so I was hungry and then I ate like two dishes of pudding and  my smoothie and now I'm uploading the recipe to my blog whilst curled up  on the sofa in a ball of very happy regret. Make the pudding after breakfast, is all I'm saying. And double the recipe next time, David. I ate so much of this stuff (he had a serving, too) that now we only have one serving left! ;A; (This is a fabulous way to get rid of leftover rice, by the way. Make a cup of rice, eat a quarter cup of it for lunch, whine that you don't want rice for lunch anymore, the leftover rice'll get nice and hard and  inedible as straight-up rice, and then boom! Pudding!) :} Rice Pudding is NOT a Breakfast Food Ingredients 3/4 cup uncooked rice, which you will cook 1/3 cup raisins 1/4 cup milk (I use soy) 1 tbsp Irish cream 2 cups milk (I use soy) 1/4 ...

Thorough (Chocolate) Bread Pudding

I got a bee in my (Easter) bonnet yesterday to make a new chocolate recipe. Cakes and brownies are nice, but I needed some variety, you know? So I googled for "best chocolate recipe" and lo and behold, the first one I clicked had stuff I could get 'hold of easily and looked DELICIOUS. Fast-forward to Friday night, biking home from work. "I need to stop at the market and buy Hawaiian bread," I tell my long-suffering (but very well-fed) partner, fully expecting "why" to be his response. Instead, I got, "Okay," mostly because Hawaiian bread is delicious and the suggestion to have it in the house is not likely to ever meet with resistance from him. Only Market Basket didn't have  any Hawaiian bread. They had Sweet Bread, which smelled like Hawaiian bread but weighed considerably more. I bought some, along with two hands of bananas, a small thing of heavy whipping cream, and a carton of cherry tomatoes, then - in an act of extraordinary s...

Cheesy Send-off New Year's Eve Fondue

We do fondue all of once a year, always on New Year's Eve. We talk a lot about doing fondue other times throughout the year, but it never seems to happen. Probably because fondue tends to be on the pricey side of things, and something about eating a huge pot of cheese when my cholesterol is flirting with being problematic just seems like a really bad call. Still. Fondue is tasty times. And as a send-off to 2013, we found a  really freakin' good fondue recipe , one so good, it'll probably be our tradition from now on to use it on New Year's Eve. Maybe use it on other days of the year, too. Who knows! (Note: This is a large meal for two people, a satisfyingly small meal for four. I think I'll double it for four people next year, even though three of the four of us are trying to lose weight.) Cheesy Send-off New Year's Eve Fondue Ingredients 1 tsp [2 tsp] diced garlic 1 cup [2 cups] white wine (I used Riesling because that's what I had on hand) 1 ...

Richer than Midas Butterscotch Bread Pudding

I became curious about butterscotch bread pudding after seeing it on the menu at John Harvard's in Cambridge, MA. Made it just after my 28th birthday, and we've been in love with it ever since.  The original recipe, by Paula Deen , was a good starting place, but I disagree with the bread she uses, the nuts recommended, and the ingredients used in the glaze, so this is my take on it. It's rich, it's horrifically bad for your health, but it's also absolutely delicious and really worth making, every once in a while. Enjoy! Richer than Midas Butterscotch Bread Pudding Ingredients Pudding 2 cups white sugar 5 eggs 2 cups milk (I always use soymilk, and it's delish) 2 tsp vanilla extract 9 slices heavy sandwich bread - the more grains, oats, and seeds, the better - cut into crouton-size pieces 1/4 cup (half a stick) butter, softened/melted (do it in the microwave, no harm there) 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar 1 cup crushed walnuts ...
