Vader's Fist Black Bean Burgers

I HAVEN'T MADE THIS RECIPE YET.  JUST UPLOADING IT HERE SO I'LL HAVE MY RECIPE AT HAND WHEN I'M READY TO TRY IT OUT.  WILL UPDATE ONCE IT'S BEEN TESTED.

Smashburger should get quite a lot of credit for this recipe, because holy crap is their New Englander black bean burger amazing, but they're also to blame for it because they're too far from my house for me to walk there and get the New Englander whenever the spirit moves me, so here we are.

Adapted from this delightful recipe and saved here so it doesn't walk away from me.

The name comes from how hard this recipe punches, and how awesome it is to have the sweet glow of the cranberries against the dark power of the burger.  Just don't choke on it.  That's bad for you.

Vader's Fist Black Bean Burgers (with cranberries)

Ingredients
1 15-oz can black beans
Olive oil for sauteeing
1/4 cup bell pepper
1/2 onion, diced
2 cloves garlic
3/4 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp paprika
1/4 cup oat flour
1/4 cup feta
1 egg
2 tsp worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp ketchup
Pinch salt
Gratuitous pepper

1/2 onion, sliced into rings
1/2 cup wholeberry cranberry sauce
1/4 cup crumbled feta or blue cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325.  Spread drained beans onto a baking sheet and bake 15 minutes to dry them out.
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil on medium-high heat and saute the pepper, onion, and garlic until they're all soft (maybe 5 minutes).
  3. Put the oats into a food processor and grind them up, then add the spices, feta, and sauteed pepper/onion/garlic mix.
  4. Dump that into a large mixing bowl and add the egg, worcestershire sauce, ketchup, salt, and pepper, mixing them all together nicely.
  5. The beans are probably done by this point, so throw them into the food processor and pulse them to mash them up a bit, but not completely.
  6. Add that to the mixing bowl and mix thoroughly.
  7. Heat your skillet again and add some more olive oil.  Do this on pretty high heat -- I'll do it on 8-9 on my stove.
  8. Scoop out 1/3 cup for each burger and pat it into a burger-shape.
  9. Fry 2 1/2 minutes per side, then serve onto a bed of ... hmm.  What were we going to serve these on?  Originally I was thinking green salad, but that's gross and comes in gross plastic and I can't grow my own lettuce to save my SOUL, so ... I'll fix that later.
  10. WHILE THIS IS FRYING, mix together the crumbled cheese and wholeberry cranberry sauce.
  11. Keep your pan hot and add the half sliced onion.
  12. Fry those until they're caramelized, then put almost all of them on top of the burger.
  13. Top that with the cranberry sauce/cheese mixture, then put the reserved fried onion slices on top of that.
  14. Now EAT!
